Serving those who Served
Last year's fishing tournament helped us raise over $112,000 to support Habitat for Humanity of Hillsborough County's Veterans Initiative. With these funds, Habitat Hillsborough was able to build a new home for a U.S. veteran in need and repair homes and add needed features like wheel chair access ramps for 10 additional U.S. veterans and their families.
The Veteran Build home went to U.S. Veteran Vincent Smith. This local veteran fought for our freedom by serving tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan. But now, this Air Force veteran is serving someone else...his brother.
Vincent is a primary caretaker for his younger brother, who suffers from a rare form of cancer. Vincent's brother also needs a wheelchair to get around.
As a way to show appreciation, the community built the brothers a gift they will never forget: a new home.
Thanks to Habitat for Humanity's "Veteran Build" home program, funded by fishing tournament participants and event sponsors, and built by community volunteers, the new home was built in just six weeks. Just before Christmas, the brothers were presented with keys to their new home.
"This makes us have a better life and it makes him have life feel more regular, more normal for him because he wasn't always like this," Vincent said.
The home was built with special features specifically for Vincent’s brother, like wheelchair accessible entryways & shower, handrails, lowered appliances for easier reach, and wider access features for mobility and accessibility.
